release writes "Just a few hours from Detroit, south not north lies a stream literally teaming with Steelhead come the first of November.
We have run many groups to Elk Creek, just the other side of Cleveland a short 3 ? hour drive South from Detroit. We were first turned on to the area from one of our customers, he said ?you should give it a try, its full of fish! Perhaps a 20-fish day is not out of the question.? With that statement how could we not check it out.
So we packed up the truck and headed out for Erie Pennsylvania. He said ?bring a 6-weight rod you?ll be happy you did.? Not being the light weight rod fanatic that most are, I brought the 8 weight and was happy I did. When releasing fish it?s important to be sure they successfully swim away, if you use a bigger rod they won?t be so tired for release. The fish are not in the 20lb class or even close, I think 12lb was the largest so far. However, he was right about the numbers, there is a great number of Steelhead because they plant so many. Most of the fish are stocked, and most are 7-8 lb. with the occasional 12 pounders.
The best time to fish it is in November, everyone who hunts is hunting and that?s when the fish are fresh and the water is cooling before the big freeze.
It?s not unheard of to get these fish to move to a Zonker, a Zoo Cougar, or a Popsicle when the conditions are right. Otherwise fishing with a simple indicator rig and a floating line is all you need. The flies are as simple as the rig with Krystal Estaz eggs being the best choice. Not to mention Sucker Spawn, egg sucking stones, brown wooley?s, small black stones, and any of the usual Michigan patterns.

I know where I?ll be this November! In fact, we run a few free trips for those that haven?t been Steelheading before. This year?s trip will be in November with only a few spots available. We provide all the rods & reels needed. All you need is a good attitude, flies, leaders, waders etc.
