Steelhead Patterns: The PM Caddis - Steelhead Pattern

Fly Tying Patterns Possibly the most effective steelhead nymph ever, the PM Caddis is an easy to tie imitation of the Rhyacophila caddis larvae that get dislodged from the gravel when steelhead are spawning. .

Originated by Jeff "Bear" Andrews, this fly is easy to tie and you can't have enough of them in your fly box.

The Recipie:

  • Hook: #6-#10 Dai-Riki 135 TMC 2457 or equivalent
  • Thread: Tan 6/0
  • Body: Small tubing shown here. You can also use chartreuse Larva Lace
  • Hackle: Tan or Brown, 3-4 Turns
  • Head: Hares Ear (Rabbit Dub) or tan ostrich herl
  • Alt Body: Olive ultra chenille w/fine wire ribbing

Holographic Caddis

In another variation of the caddis pattern, Bear uses chartruese turkey biot over a fine synthetic holographic dubbing for the body. Called the Holographic Caddis, this pattern offers a little more flash than most of the competition. Giving the steelhead something to key in on. Bear tied this pattern up at a fly tying class at Flymart FlyShop in Jan 2004.

Tier: Bear Andrews

Holographic Caddis Recipie
  • Hook: #6-#10 Dai-Riki 135 TMC 2457 or equivalent
  • Thread: Black 8/0 or 6/0
  • Body: Chartruese turkey biot. Ice dubbing in insect green dubbed in starting behind hook point.
  • Hackle: Hen Tan or Brown mottled, 3-4 Turns
  • Head: Ice dubbing in peacock black or lite brite dubbing.

Instructions:

  1. Lay thread base to a point behind the hook barb. Tie in turkey biot by tip. Does not really matter which side is up.
  2. Dub in a body of ice dubbing in insect green or caddis color. Stop about 1/5 back from eye and secure with a couple of wraps of thread.
  3. Using your hackle pliers, wrap the turkey biot over the dubbing. Leave some space between the wraps to let the reflective ice dubbing show through. Secure tag end down with a few wraps of thread.
  4. Grab the hen hackle feather with shiny or outside facing towards hook eye. Preen the feather for standard collar wraps and tie in by feather tip. Wrap the hackle two to four turns as desired and secure feather shaft with a few wraps of thread.
  5. Dub the head of the fly with black peacock ice dubbing and then secure at hook eye. Whip finish and apply cement to finish the fly.
