Michigan braces for West Nile Virus
People should be concerned enough about the West Nile Virus, to take some precautions. Around metro Detroit, reports of dead crows have grown dramatically.
This virus has caused deaths in other parts of the country and the possibility does exist here. The CDC states " Human illness from West Nile virus is rare, even in areas where the virus has been reported. The chance that any one person is going to become ill from a mosquito bite is low.You can further reduce your chances of becoming ill by protecting yourself from mosquito bites."

When I checked the CDC site they listed 156 confirmed/probable cases and 9 deaths. With no reported human cases in Michigan, as of Aug 14, 2002. The CDC recommends that you use insect repellents containing DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) when you're outdoors.

While I certainly won't quit fishing out of fear, I am taking the threat seriously enough to folllow the CDC recommendations. With the exception of "being outdoors during the hours of dusk to dawn." One of the best ways to protect yourself, is to cover exposed skin with clothing (reads as long sleve shirts and pants) and to use a quality insect repellent. Anglers should take special precautions as they are constantly outdoors and around water. You need a good insect repellent that lasts during outdoor activities and is water repellent. 3M makes one of those products designed for the oudoors and anglers needs in mind. .

In a 3M Scientific Angler product press release, 3M states, "Providing effective protection against mosquitoes for up to 12 hours, and up to 6-hour protection from ticks, gnats, biting flies, chiggers and fleas, 3M Scientific Anglers now offers Ultrathon Insect Repellent with a special moisture resistant formula. Ultrathon was originally developed for the U.S. Army, and was used with excellent results during Desert Storm, notes John Stark, lab manager for Scientific Anglers. Plus the special repellent formula resists water splashes, perspiration and rain, making it ideal for use by anglers in all types of fishing conditions - and any other outdoor activity. With health care professionals cautioning against prolonged use of products high in DEET, especially among children, Ultrathon provides protection with only 35-percent DEET. And with the threat of the West Nile virus spreading from its first detection in New York in 1999, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises people to protect themselves from mosquitoes by applying insect repellent before venturing outside at dawn, dusk and during the evening. Available in an easy-to-carry two-ounce tube, the non-oily cream formula can quickly be applied by hand to exposed skin. It has no added scent that could transfer to your fishing gear or other outdoor equipment." The Suggested retail is $8.95

Most plastics can be damaged by DEET based products and this includes fly line, monofilament. and some "waterproof" clothing. Take special care not to let the DEET based products contact you gear directly. We checked and Simms makes DEET Resistant waders and outerware.
