Trouting on the Au Sable River's South Branch

Fly Fishing Destinations  ChromeKid writes " About a week ago, I was invited to stay at the Oxbow Club, located right on the South Branch of the Au Sable. I was fishing with my Dad, his buddy, his buddy's son, and a couple of his buddy's friends. My Dad and I stayed for four days, and I ended up catching over twenty-five Brookies, and a few bonus Browns.

During the day we would fish shallow riffles, and a few pools for both Brook, and Brown Trout. The fishing was excellent! At night we would fish the Isonychia, and Brown Drake hatch, witch rewarded us with a few good sized Browns, and a couple nice Brookies!

Fly Fishing In Bavaria - Munich?s Fishing and Hunting Museum

    Fly Fishing Destinations

    [ Deutsches Jagd-Und Fischereimuseum ]

We American fly fishers have a tendency to believe that we ?invented? this pleasing sport, when in fact, fly fishing has been part of the outdoor experience in the ?Old World? for centuries. Proof of that statement is found at 53 Neuhauser Strabe [pronounced as Strasse], the location of the Bavarian Hunting and Fishing Museum in Munich, Germany.

This fine museum, located in the olde or historical section of Munich, houses one of the best collections of antique hunting and fishing equipment in the world, much of it fly fishing related. It is evident, from walking it?s three expansive floors of exhibits, that there is a fine fly fishing heritage in this area of Germany known as Bavaria.

     Ohio Steelhead Fishing

Fly Fishing Destinations  Steelheading is big in Ohio and anglers throughout the Midwest come to target the Ohio Steelhead from fall through spring, as weather and conditions permit. With a recent jump in stream water levels, this area could get hot right now.

Approximately 400,000 (100,000 per stream) steelhead trout are released annually in the Rocky, Chagrin and Grand Rivers and Conneaut Creek. Anglers should note that besides the four current stocking streams, several other rivers including the Vermilion, Ashtabula, Arcola and even the Cuyahoga sport runs of stray fish.

This just about guarantees great fall and spring runs of Steelhead in the Ohio region. Stream anglers can expect an average steelhead trout to be 25 inches long and weigh 5 to 6 pounds. Larger fish measure in the 28- to 31-inch range and weigh 8 to 12 pounds. Most of the larger fish are caught later in November through April as the fish stage for the annual spring spawning rituals.

Sault Ste. Marie Rapids for Chinook Salmon

    Fly Fishing Destinations

Jerry and Steve Kunnath of Fly Rod and Gun, John Vincent and I hit the Rapids in Sault Ste Marie on Oct 10th 2002. Hoping to get into some good Chinook salmon fishing and possibly some steelhead. We arrived Sunday evening and fall weather was in full swing. We got our lodging and caught some rest before we ventured down to the rapids in the morning.

Winds were gusting up to 45 MPH with freezing rain when we parked for our walk in to the rapids Monday morning. When we arrived on the river there were salmon everywhere working the gravel and stacked thick in the pools. We headed for deeper holes and left them alone to do their thing on the gravel.
